Transcrbing Data

Morning!

Today you are going to practise transcribing data. This could be very useful for your investigation (and you will begin to understand how time consuming it can be!) It is important to be able to transcribe accurately and to use conventions consistently.

Please transcribe at least 2 minutes of each clip. When you have done that, choose at least one clip and post an analysis of the clip onto your blog. You need to consider contextual issues carefully; make any links to theories, concepts and issues around gender, power and technology; use as much spoken language terminology as you can.

A2 Language Change

Morning!

The aim for this lesson is to focus on some revision of what to look for in a Language Change essay and how to approach an analysis more systematically through using the frameoworks.

Task One

On your blog or on Word, answer the following questions:

  • What influences language change?
  • How do we create new words in the English language? Give as many examples as you can.
  • What is the difference between an acronym and an initialism?
  • Give some examples of morphological change.
  • What is overt prestige and what type of lexis would create this?
  • What is semantic change? Give examples of amelioration; perjoration; weakening; narrowing; generalisation.
  • What are the reasons for spelling change?
  • How has the use of capital letters changed?
  • What should you look for in terms of grammar change?
  • What is informalisation?
  • What is convergence?
  • What is Received Pronunciation?
  • What is Estuary English?
  • What different attitudes are there to how we pronounce words and speak in general?
  • What is standardisation? What has had an impact on standardisation?
  • What different attitudes are there to language change? Name some theorists / linguists / journalists who have commented on this area.

Task Two

Complete the table attached. This will focus you on the texts from the 2009 paper in a systematic way. See me for the text!

Systematic Analysis

Enjoy!

An Interesting Article on Grammar

Morning!

Have a read of this article. How important is good grammar these days? Are we more lenient or should we be concerned about people using bad grammar?

http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/apr/28/bad-grammar-award-shortlist-english-language-nhs-tesco

Have a look through the Grammar Guide from Bristol University (see previous post) and work through some of the exercises.

Log onto the English and Media Website

Revision Work

Welcome back!

I hope you had a great break break from college but not too much of a break from work! Today's lesson is a gentle revision lesson based on terminology you need to know.

First of all, please ensure that you have posted your powerpoint onto the padlet page. There are some interesting ones already. These can be used as starting points for your own revision as they are not necessarily comprehensive.

Next, spend 30 minutes maximum writing a quiz for your fellow students. Write 8-10 questions on any aspect of CLA; write 8-10 questions on any aspect of Language Change; write 8-10 questions on any other aspect of language eg power, gender and the frameworks.

When you have done this, please post on the revision Padlet page: Revision Padlet Page

Now, have a go at answering some of the questions posted.

Finally, follow the link to the exam papers. Write a plan for either the CLA or the Language Change question (we have already looked at one of the Language Change questions, so obviously do the other!) I will let you know which one to do - so don't start until you have spoken to me! You need to bring your plan to work on next lesson. June 2011 Source Booklet   June 2011 Exam Paper

We will also be going through your responses to the CLA question you did at the end of last term and working out how to improve the breadth of your answers. This will be useful Ticklist for Jan 2011 Response

Great Stuff!!

Follow the link to the January 2011 paper. Using the first source, cut and paste at least 10 example from the text and do a detailed analysis of each utterence with reference to as many of the frameworks as possible, and referring to gender and power issues if necessary. Make sure you refer to the context in each example.

Holiday Revision Work

Please create a powerpoint presentation on the language area I have given you. Give as many examples and references to theory as you can. Refer to notes and books to help you.  Please post it onto the padlet wall (link below). This needs to be done by the end of the Easter holidays. Share your knowledge!

A2 Language Work

Hello!

  • First task is to have a go at the following grammar and punctuation quiz. Let me know how many you get right and make sure you try to find out where you went wrong.

Grammar Quiz

  • Can't remember if you have seen this text - what sort of issues are raised about language and gender?

Bossy Text

  • Please make notes on the following areas of language change discussed in the two articles below.
You can make notes on your blog or in your notebook.

Spelling Issues

Pronunciation Errors

  • Please read sources F - K in the booklet.

June 2011 Source Booklet

Prepare a response to the following question:

Texts F to K are questions and answers taken from The British Apollo, a magazine
published in 1726. Referring in detail to the texts and to relevant ideas from language study, explore some
aspects of language change.

You need a range of points to feedback on. I would like one example paragraph by the end of the lesson.

Gender Text - Boys' Talk!

2010 Exam Paper

Write a couple of developed and exemplified paragraphs in response to the gender question. Email me your response (nst@.......)

Aim to refer to some theorists / theory - even if it is to disprove what they say. Don't forget you can refer to your own findings and observations!

Competitive VS Cooperative Conversation  This is the powerpoint from the other day - it is quite wordy so I thought you might want to have a look through it in your own time!

Language Bits and Pieces!

Morning!

To get you warmed up, I would like you to have a go at this grammar test. Be honest and let me know how you get on. Make a note of any grammar points you are unsure of and find out the correct answer! You'll be pleased to know I did get 14/14 : )

Grammar Test

Then I would like you to start working on some gender and language research.

1) Find out about Peter Trudgill's Norwich Research. What did he study and what were his findings?
2) Find out about Robin Lakoff's research. She explored the ways in which women's language was deficient when compared to men's. In what ways does she suggest female language is deficient?

Post your responses on your blog please!

Watch this video and comment on what is being suggested about language and gender.

Pantene Advert

Finally, return to the text we started to explore in the other lesson and write at least one developed and well constructed paragraph in response to the question. Please email me your response and we will explore them next lesson.

Have fun!

Exam Question A2

Text D contains extracts from Instructions for American Servicemen in Britain 1942. It was produced by the United States War Department and given to all American Servicemen being sent to Britain during the Second World War. Text E is the beginning of an article from the Daily Mail's website, published in 2011.

Referring in detail to both texts and to relevant ideas from language study, analyse the ways language has changed over time.

Remember the Assessment Objectives:

AO1 Use of terminology

AO2 Reference to concepts and issues

AO3 Contextual factors and influences

A2 Language Articles

Hello!

Your task is to find at least two articles from the BBC or a National newspaper about a language issue to do with gender / power / language change / attitudes to language / language acquisition etc. Create a link to the page on the padlet site and include a short summary in the box, stating what part of language it refers to and an outline of its contents.

http://padlet.com/wall/languagearticles

This is a useful place to sources articles for the wider reading required for you to do well in the exam - with particular focus on AO2.

There are lots of articles out there!!

Also, could you spend some time completing the questionnaire on Moodle about the coursework. Thanks!

You should have all posted your responses to the BWAG text we explored last lesson on padlet.com/wall/asexamresponses. If not, this needs to be done straightaway.

Read through the responses posted. Choose three (including your own!), save them and mark them using the mark scheme here. I would like you to highlight the different aspects of the texts according to the AOs.

Attitudes to Language Change and Technology

Hello

We are starting to look at different attitudes to language change. Some people are happy for language to change and take an interest in the variety within the English language without passing judgement. This is a descriptivist attitude. Others think language rules should be followed to the letter in a fully standardised form and pass judgement on those who do not follow those rules. This is a prescriptivist attitude.

  • The following three articles are all about the relationship between language and texting. Read each of them and make notes on the viewpoints of the writers. Do the writers display a descriptivist or prescriptivist attitude?
  •  Either post a summary of the articles on your Blog or create a word document that you can save.
  •  What is your opinion on text speak? Has it had a negative effect on language? How do you text?

John Humphries

John Sutherland on Texting

David Crystal on Texting

  • This article is about how technology has influenced new ways of using language. Can you think of any other new words that have come from use of the internet?

Technology Influences

Below is a really useful link to a fantastic resource from the British Library with lots of texts from Old English to Twentieth Century texts. There are lots of exercises to get you thinking about language change and will certainly help you to put texts in social and political context.

AS Language Categorising Texts

Morning!

Your task today is to come up with an example response to one set of groupings from the texts we looked at last week.

First of all we are going to look at example grouping to see how it is done! Follow this link Text Groupings Example Paragraphs

Write your own ideas in a similar way and email to me at the end of the lesson. I will then put all the responses together and you should have a range of groupings presented to you (well, that's the idea anyway!)

ADVANCE WARNING: There will be no lesson on Monday 20th January as English Staff have a training day. You will need to use this time to finish off coursework. I will post a checklist on this blog, so watch this space!

Have a great lesson!
