Some Language Change Tasks

Morning!

Today you are going to do a variety of tasks on language change - just trying to keep you busy!

TASK 1: LEXIS

We have discussed the concept of 'borrowing.' This is when words from other languages become part of our own.

Find out where these words have all come from:

anorak barbeque barrack blizzard bongo bonsai boomerang budgerigar bungalow chipmunk chutney dinghy  dungarees gnu haiku hamburger igloo kangaroo karaoke ketchup llama mohair potato puma pyjamas safari sauna  shampoo sherbert ski skyscraper taboo tattoo tea toboggan tortilla totem trek tycoon yeti

TASK 2: PHONOLOGY
We have also begun to consider attitudes to changing language and language in general.
Read the following article on accents and write a summary of the opinions presented in the piece. Accent
What is your experience of different accents? How would you describe your accent? Have you ever been judged because of how you speak?
Find another article about accent and post it on your blog.

TASK 3: GRAMMAR & LEXIS
Read the 18th Century text attached.
What do you notice about the grammar? Think about sentence order eg where words are placed; think about use of prepositions; and think about the types of sentences used. Write a paragraph on your findings.
Next, consider the lexis and semantics of the text - can you find any examples of language change? What process has happened?
This is from  the British Library Archive - a fantastic resource for language change - have a look around.

A2 Language Work - Media Text & Language Change

Good Morning!

A couple of things to do today.

Firstly, a quick exercise on language change.

Look at the following words. Each one is followed by its earlier meaning and has gone under a process of semantic change. Explain the modern meaning and explain what process the word has gone through. Post your response on your blog.

  • Lean: thin, emaciated
  • Novice: a member of a religious order who has not taken vows yet
  • Revolutionary: someone who favours overthrowing the government
  • Lewd: not having an official position in the church.
EXT: what other ways does langauge undergo sematic change.

Secondly, continue work on your media text. Remember this is a 750-1000 word text. Most of you will write an article. You need to think carefully about the context of your text and make sure your language reflects this.

Hand in your first draft of this on Friday.

Have fune!

Transcrbing Data

Morning!

Today you are going to practise transcribing data. This could be very useful for your investigation (and you will begin to understand how time consuming it can be!) It is important to be able to transcribe accurately and to use conventions consistently.

Please transcribe at least 2 minutes of each clip. When you have done that, choose at least one clip and post an analysis of the clip onto your blog. You need to consider contextual issues carefully; make any links to theories, concepts and issues around gender, power and technology; use as much spoken language terminology as you can.

A2 Language Change

Morning!

The aim for this lesson is to focus on some revision of what to look for in a Language Change essay and how to approach an analysis more systematically through using the frameoworks.

Task One

On your blog or on Word, answer the following questions:

  • What influences language change?
  • How do we create new words in the English language? Give as many examples as you can.
  • What is the difference between an acronym and an initialism?
  • Give some examples of morphological change.
  • What is overt prestige and what type of lexis would create this?
  • What is semantic change? Give examples of amelioration; perjoration; weakening; narrowing; generalisation.
  • What are the reasons for spelling change?
  • How has the use of capital letters changed?
  • What should you look for in terms of grammar change?
  • What is informalisation?
  • What is convergence?
  • What is Received Pronunciation?
  • What is Estuary English?
  • What different attitudes are there to how we pronounce words and speak in general?
  • What is standardisation? What has had an impact on standardisation?
  • What different attitudes are there to language change? Name some theorists / linguists / journalists who have commented on this area.

Task Two

Complete the table attached. This will focus you on the texts from the 2009 paper in a systematic way. See me for the text!

Systematic Analysis

Enjoy!

An Interesting Article on Grammar

Morning!

Have a read of this article. How important is good grammar these days? Are we more lenient or should we be concerned about people using bad grammar?

http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/apr/28/bad-grammar-award-shortlist-english-language-nhs-tesco

Have a look through the Grammar Guide from Bristol University (see previous post) and work through some of the exercises.
