A2 Language Change

Morning!

The aim for this lesson is to focus on some revision of what to look for in a Language Change essay and how to approach an analysis more systematically through using the frameoworks.

Task One

On your blog or on Word, answer the following questions:

  • What influences language change?
  • How do we create new words in the English language? Give as many examples as you can.
  • What is the difference between an acronym and an initialism?
  • Give some examples of morphological change.
  • What is overt prestige and what type of lexis would create this?
  • What is semantic change? Give examples of amelioration; perjoration; weakening; narrowing; generalisation.
  • What are the reasons for spelling change?
  • How has the use of capital letters changed?
  • What should you look for in terms of grammar change?
  • What is informalisation?
  • What is convergence?
  • What is Received Pronunciation?
  • What is Estuary English?
  • What different attitudes are there to how we pronounce words and speak in general?
  • What is standardisation? What has had an impact on standardisation?
  • What different attitudes are there to language change? Name some theorists / linguists / journalists who have commented on this area.

Task Two

Complete the table attached. This will focus you on the texts from the 2009 paper in a systematic way. See me for the text!
