The aim for this lesson is to focus on some revision of what to look for in a Language Change essay and how to approach an analysis more systematically through using the frameoworks.
Task One
On your blog or on Word, answer the following questions:
- What influences language change?
- How do we create new words in the English language? Give as many examples as you can.
- What is the difference between an acronym and an initialism?
- Give some examples of morphological change.
- What is overt prestige and what type of lexis would create this?
- What is semantic change? Give examples of amelioration; perjoration; weakening; narrowing; generalisation.
- What are the reasons for spelling change?
- How has the use of capital letters changed?
- What should you look for in terms of grammar change?
- What is informalisation?
- What is convergence?
- What is Received Pronunciation?
- What is Estuary English?
- What different attitudes are there to how we pronounce words and speak in general?
- What is standardisation? What has had an impact on standardisation?
- What different attitudes are there to language change? Name some theorists / linguists / journalists who have commented on this area.
Task Two
Complete the table attached. This will focus you on the texts from the 2009 paper in a systematic way. See me for the text!
